Cancer treatment and precision medicine is rapidly evolving, and new targeted therapies are approved for use regularly. The Molecular Tumor Board exists to help clinicians match the best therapy to patients and expand the use of precision oncology in Iowa. The use of cancer treatments that are tailored to specific molecular mutations and biomarkers have been associated with favorable clinical outcomes across multiple cancer types.

The Molecular Tumor Board at Holden is designed to supplement oncology tumor boards, and consists of experts in medical oncology, pharmacy, pathology, and genetics.

How it Works

The Molecular Tumor board will send potential patient tumor samples for molecular-profile testing. The tumor board will interpret results of genetic mutations, biomarkers and other molecular alterations in a patient’s tumor sample. The results will then be discussed at the tumor board and clinical recommendations will be made. These may include clinical trials and other investigational drugs, targeted therapies, and others.

Case Submissions

Clinicians (UI and non-UI) are welcome to submit a case for review by the MTB during their monthly meetings, at no cost to you, the patient or institution. See instructions below.

Cases must be submitted at least 7 days prior to the next meeting.

  1. Ensure that your patient has had a genomic report ordered and test results obtained. This is required for case submission.
  2. Complete the online, PHI – compliant MTB Case Submission Form.
  3. Once the case has been submitted and approved, the submitting clinician will be assigned a date and invited to present at the MTB meeting.

Protected Health Information

Because of the online, PHI – compliant nature of our online submission form, patient protected health information (PHI) does not have to be removed.

Treatment Recommendations

Will be discussed at the MTB meeting and then faxed and/or emailed to the submitting physician.
