Herky on Parade

 

Herky on Parade is returning to celebrate Herky the Hawk’s 75th birthday with nearly 100 new statues spread throughout Johnson County in the summer of 2024.

Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center’s statue is titled “Colors of Courage,” and was created with input from cancer center staff, patients, and members of the Cancer Patient Family Advisory Board.

The design features awareness ribbons in over two dozen colors and patterns to represent different cancer types and roles:

  • Ribbon 1: Sarcoma and bone cancers (yellow), bladder cancer (marigold/blue/purple), pancreatic cancer (purple)
  • Ribbon 2: Caregivers (plum), thyroid cancer (teal/pink/blue), breast cancer (pink)
  • Ribbon 3: Melanoma (black), neuroendocrine tumors (zebra), brain cancer (grey)
  • Ribbon 4: Lung cancer (white), cervical cancer (teal/white), ovarian cancer (teal)
  • Ribbon 5: Multiple myeloma (burgundy), head & neck cancer (burgundy/ivory), uterine cancer (peach)
  • Ribbon 6: Liver cancer (emerald green), lymphoma (lime green), gallbladder and bile duct cancer (kelly green), anal cancer (green/purple)
  • Ribbon 7: Colon cancer (dark blue), prostate cancer (light blue)
  • Ribbon 8: Testicular cancer (orchid), stomach and esophageal cancer (periwinkle)
  • Ribbon 9: Leukemia (orange), kidney cancer (orange), appendix cancer (amber), childhood cancers (gold)

The Colors of Courage Herky can be viewed outside of the University of Iowa College of Public Health at 145 N. Riverside Drive in Iowa City. The statues will be up through the end of August, at which point they will be moved to a permanent location.
